Erhoff Fondens Talentpris 2022

Assistant Professor Nicholas Taylor, PhD

Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Free University of Brussels

Nicholas Taylor graduated in Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Free University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium in 2005.

Two years later, he obtained a Master degree of Biochemistry from Ghent University, Belgium. He defended his PhD in molecular biology at EMBL and Heidelberg University in Germany in 2011. Post doc training at leading universities in Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

Since 2018, Nicholas Taylor has been group leader and associate professor at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, Faculty of Health and Medical Science, University of Copenhagen. The research team headed by Dr. Taylor comprises of 14 students and postdoctoral researchers.

The team explores aspects of basic cellular and molecular functions including bacteriophage injection systems, the flagellar engine of bacteria and molecular mechanisms of multidrug transporters that possess physiological and pharmokinetics functions.

Dr. Taylor has published 30 scientific papers primarily in very high impact journals including four in Nature (three of which as first author), one in Cell (as last author), and four in Nature sister journals – again as either first or corresponding author. He has attracted several million Danish kroner from competitive grant bodies to fuel his research team.

In 2021, he became an EMBO Young Investigator, which recognizes the best group leaders under 40 years in Europe. He has now turned 36.

The Board of the Erhoff Foundation concludes:

Assistant Professor Nicholas Taylor has demonstrated talent and a major engagement in original basic research within cellular and molecular membrane biology with translational potentials.
